I was given the ultimate gift this Christmas: the gift of the J-4000 Jiffy Garment Steamer, so I can successfully avoid ironing. This is a true gift, straight from the heart, from my mother who hates wrinkles.
Let’s back up for a minute. My mother, a very particular and successful career woman, cannot stand two things: wrinkled clothing and chewing gum. So, the concept that her only daughter would ever be seen in public with wrinkled clothing was slightly horrifying, which I’m sure is what prompted her to buy this expensive steamer for me for Christmas. (Yes, I know, I’m very lucky and probably spoiled.) She commented, “it’s going to take you just as long to steam that shirt as it would for you to iron it” but that’s not true. The steamer is easier to use and does not require lugging out an ironing board and plugging in an iron. The glorious steamer stays stationary (in my bedroom) and simply requires the flip of a switch.
When I mentioned the one thing that I really wanted was a commercial grade steamer, I did absolutely no research. She, clever woman, went to a local store and asked which one they used, and they recommended the Jiffy. I used to have a cheaper steamer, which required distilled water, and did not work very well while it worked, which is why I specifically wanted a commercial steamer. It makes a HUGE difference.
Does it gets shirts as straight as dry cleaning? No. Are my clothes now steamed, refreshed, and wrinkle free just like they would be if I used an iron? Yes. I flip it on before I get in the shower so it’s ready to go while I’m getting ready. It takes me a few minutes to steam all of my clothes, and voila! I’m ready to go. It’s miraculous. Much easier and just as effective as ironing.
Last weekend, I steamed all of our drapes. That was hard work. They had a lot of creases and wrinkles but I discovered a trick: steam from the inside first, and then steam on the outside, and the wrinkles go away much quicker.
This one requires regular water and holds a lot of water, so you could steam for two hours before refilling it – or, just leave it in there for a week to use it every day. The other thing is this one has a high steam power (the product description includes the info on Amazon) which I think is the reason it works so much better than ones I’ve used in the past. It really puts out a lot of steam and steams my clothes quickly. It takes about 15 minutes to warm up and then it’s ready to go. It takes a few minutes to steam, and clothes are refreshed and wrinkle-free.
