At the recommendation of several people as a must-see in London, we visited Churchill’s War Rooms on our first trip to London. This is one of the top historical / tourist things I’d recommend anyone do on a London trip! It’s fascinating.
Why go: Walking through the underground rooms where Churchill led Britain through World War II feels like stepping back in time. It really is this crazy preserved location that shaped the world. The ran the war efforts – slept here – had meetings – made decisions – and then when the war was over, everyone left it.
What is it? It is the secret underground complex that served as the nerve center for the British war effort during World War II. The Cabinet War Rooms, where Churchill and his ministers met, have been preserved just as they were during the war, giving visitors a sense of the historical significance of this location.
Ticket tip: We had to wait in line for tickets to the War Room, which would have been avoided had we booked ahead of time. Definitely add the audiotour, which gives great insight into each room, about his life, and a snapshot of history at that time.
What I wish we’d booked: the Get Your Guide Walking Tour of Westminster & Churchill’s War Room or a guided tour of Westminster Abbey and Parliament
Get a glass of wine after the tour: Take a stroll along the Thames River and snap photos of Big Ben & Parliament and make some “look kids! Big Ben! Parliament!” jokes (a must.) Head to Gillray’s located at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall for a glass of Chablisienne Chablis (or whatever cocktail suits you!) + chips.
