📒 Charleston, SC Field Notes

Slightly North of Broad has been a Charleston favorite for decades. We’d never dined here, so I was excited to try this popular spot on our recent visit to Charelston. It delivered exactly what we were hoping for: comforting Southern flavors, a warm atmosphere, and one of those nights that feels easy and memorable from start to finish.

A classic Charleston restaurant with a cozy feel

Walking into Slightly North of Broad, you immediately get that Charleston classic feeling. The space is intimate and inviting, with soft lighting, exposed brick, and a hum of conversation that makes you want to settle in and stay awhile. It’s polished without being pretentious—the kind of restaurant that works just as well for a special night out as it does for a spontaneous dinner.

We even ran into friends from Myrtle Beach while we were there, which somehow made the evening feel even more like a neighborhood experience—proof that SNOB really is a go-to spot for locals and visitors alike.

Bringing our own wine (and why it worked)

We brought our own bottle of wine—a Napa Cabernet Sauvignon—which might sound unexpected for a Southern menu, but it worked beautifully. The richness of the cab paired surprisingly well with the heartier dishes and added a personal touch to the meal that made the night feel relaxed and unhurried. Most fine dining restaurants will let you bring in your bottle for a $30-40 corkage fee.

What we ordered at Slightly North of Broad

  • Steamed Local Clams: Sweet, briny clams gently steamed in a white-wine garlic cream and served with grilled baguette—simple, comforting, and impossible not to finish to the last drop.
  • Butternut Squash Bisque: Silky and cozy, finished with crème fraîche spelling SNOB and a pecan crumble that added just enough richness and texture to make it feel like the perfect seasonal starter.
  • Grass-Fed Beef Carpaccio: Thinly sliced and beautifully balanced with capers, parmesan, and grilled bread—light but indulgent, and ideal for sharing.
  • BBQ Tuna My entrée and a standout: tuna topped with fried oysters, country ham butter, and green onions. Rich, savory, and surprisingly perfect with the Napa cab we brought along.
  • Shrimp & Grits: Will’s pick and a Lowcountry classic done right—tender shrimp over creamy Geechie Boy grits with house sausage, country ham, tomatoes, garlic, and green onions. Comfort food in the best way.

Why Slightly North of Broad still stands out

What makes Slightly North of Broad special isn’t trendiness or over-the-top presentation. It’s consistency. The food feels thoughtful and familiar, the atmosphere is warm, and the experience reminds you why some restaurants become Charleston staples in the first place.

If you’re searching for a Slightly North of Broad restaurant review in Charleston, SC, or simply looking for a cozy, reliable dinner spot downtown, SNOB is still very much worth the reservation. And it’s worth returning to!
