Optical Grape Sorting
We visited Rodney Strong during harvest one year. We were lucky to get a behind-the-scenes tour and see the optical grape sorting machine in action! This incredible machine has a computerized eye that picks the best grapes for wine, and discards the rest. Check it out:
A lot of my love of this wine has to do with our experience visiting. We’ve been to a mountain farm-to-table dinner overlooking Rockaway Vineyard. We’ve sampled from barrels with a thief* with one of the winemakers.
*a thief an elongated glass tube that you dip into the top of a barrel to taste it during the winemaking process.
