Kid chefs will love Kidstir, a fun cooking kit delivered monthly

A review of Kidstir

My six-year-old is certain he is going to be a chef and make delicacies such as “grilled cheese, chicken fingers, and hibachi shrimp.”

Kidstir is a subscription for aspiring kid chefs, which sends simple, kid-friendly recipes and kitchen tools each month. We received our first kit, which featured holiday cookie recipes, cookie cutters, and an icing decorating tool.

Kits are seasonal, and have a theme – December was holiday cookies, but others this year included snacks, breakfast, spooky treats for Halloween, and a sandwich kit.

You do need to purchase the ingredients, but they are not obscure items and most we had in our pantry for these recipes.

What I like about Kidstir is the recipes are simple and offer excellent tips all on fun, well-designed pages with interactive questions and activities. What he likes about Kidstir is getting mail and his own cooking tools. The recipes fit into a binder delivered with your first box (if you sign up for the year subscription, otherwise you can purchase it separately) so kids are building their own cookbook.

Even I learned something new: form the dough in a ball, then flatten it like a pancake between two sheets of plastic wrap before refridgerating makes the dough easy to roll when you’re ready to use the cookie cutter. It was so easy, and clean, unlike my last attempt with a similar baking project which had dough stuck to the rolling pin and me covered in flour, and resulted in cookies that were not pretty or tasty.

Perhaps recipes designed for kids are also ideal for inept mom bakers.
