The new Cinderella movie is fun, energetic, and has a little more of an empowering message than your typical girl in distress saved by handsome prince storyline. The stepmother and stepsisters aren’t so evil. The Fairy Godmother sings disco. James Cordon is a funny mouse.
The women are the real stars of this Cinderella. The Prince’s sister is an intellectual with an edgy sense of style. The Queen is Minnie Driver and is strong, stating her opinion with just the right balance of logic and emotion. The comedy is subtle and dry. The stepmother, played by Idina Menzel, isn’t so evil. The main character, Camila Cabello, is an aspiring designer with dreams who doesn’t get sidetracked by the handsome and rich prince. Seeing women who aren’t jealous and backstab-y, who are actually supportive of other women, is absolutely refreshing. Cheers to women having each others’ backs rather than stabbing them, right? Let’s see more of that in the movies, please!
My 6-year-old and 11-year-old watched it with me and both liked it – and commented that the sisters were funny and that they weren’t mean to each other!
Good stories shape how we understand people, and I personally loved the new Cinderella movie. Let me know in the comments if you watched it, and what you thought!
