I am always so inspired when mompreneurs get in touch with me and tell me about their business. These two ladies have created a company that I am SO EXCITED to share with y’all – it’s a preppy children’s clothing company called Seesaw Society Children’s Clothing and the clothes are ADORABLE! I absolutely love their style, and I’m sure you will, too. I’m always curious how moms go from idea mode to actually launching a business, and Kristen took the time to tell us all about her process.
1- tell us about your company – how you started and how you make the adorable clothes!
Christine and I had been friends for a long time and then both happened to have baby girls within three months of each other. Right from the start we were just thrilled to dress up our new little ones. We loved seeking out, discovering and sharing new brands/labels we’d come across (there’s just nothing like finding that one, adorable piece that you simply can’t live without!) Over time, we started to realize that the classic, playful look we loved so much wasn’t always easy to find— at least at a reasonable price point—and we naturally started to discuss some ideas of our own. Christine had actually been coming up with beautiful designs for some time and using freelance patternmakers and sewers to bring them to life for her own children. With her background in textiles/design and mine in brand development/marketing, we decided to take the leap and throw ourselves into launching our own line! After quite a bit of research, brand/product development, and of course assembly of our production team—Seesaw Society was born!
2- opinion on wearing the “cute clothes” – wear them everyday or save for special occasions?
We are definitely of the opinion that there is just no reason at all to save the cutest (and/or dressier) pieces in your child’s wardrobe for special occasions! These precious years while they are little fly by—take advantage and dress them up in clothing as cute as they are every day.
We like to say that even a dress deserves a trip to the playground!
3- favorite book or website to answer your “mom questions”
With 5 kids between the two of us and one more joining the family this November, we both still love getting weekly/developmental milestone updates from whattoexpect.com! We also love perusing Huffpost Parents for interesting articles, inspirational stories, etc. Honestly though, I think our strongest source of “mom support” comes from an amazing group of women/moms we met not long after each of us had our first child. What started as a playgroup has turned into a tight circle of very close friends—and our first stop for any/all parenting questions!
4- I love the name and logo of your company- what was the inspiration?
The inspiration for our name/logo has a lot to do with that line I mentioned earlier—“Even a dress deserves a trip to the playground.” We wanted our name to convey our feelings on dressing children—classic, playful, high-quality clothing should be able to go from a playdate at the park to a special party or occasion. There doesn’t need to be much distinction between the two if the look is right and the quality is there. 5- your thoughts on being a working mom – what’s your schedule like during the day and do you have any tips on achieving the fabled “balance”? Balance is something I think we will just forever be seeking as working moms! Some days/weeks are much busier than others and certainly require lots of planning, as well as support from our spouses, families and caregivers. Overall though…we feel incredibly lucky to be doing something we love, where our children can be right by our sides much of the time! They are truly our main source of inspiration and we hope that one day, when they are a little older, they’ll look back on this time in our lives, and feel inspired by us as well!
