Apple Pie Painting on Etsy will send you a pet paint by numbers kit with everything you need. The kit includes a canvas with the drawing of your pet to paint, acrylic paint, brushes, and mixing tray. An artist hand-draws the portrait in pencil, so this truly is a custom portrait.

I was ready to dive in and start painting, but my direction-reading husband went through the instructions first, and I am glad he did. The instructions are pretty simple: you paint one color at a time, and then move on to the next. The order of paint colors is clear from the “tips and tricks” card, taking the guesswork out of how to proceed. The canvas is clearly marked with the letters that match corresponding paint colors. Some of the colors require a little bit of mixing (for example, the medium paint mixed with dark paint for medium-dark shade.)

Kids can help, too – little ones may need some supervision, but the paint doesn’t have to be exactly in the lines so it’s a great project for kids. Ours took about an hour, and we all took turns painting. The subject, Riley the golden retriever, pranced around the yard while we painted her face.
