Do you spend Saturdays on the soccer field?
My seven-year-old loves soccer. He and his buddies play at the playground at school and on weekends in the yard, in addition to the weekly practice and Saturday morning games.(Note to new soccer moms: they are not called “soccer matches” which will prompt eye-rolls. Whatever, I grew up playing tennis.)
I’m a soccer mom.
And I’ve learned a few things. Get your match face on, I’m going to help you navigate this new role.
How to be a Proper Soccer Mom
On the morning of the soccer game, everything should be cleaned, pressed, folded, and laid out in one place. If you have a girl, a matching hair bow is sitting pretty on top of the folded uniform.
When it’s your turn for soccer snacks, you should view this as your time to shine. There is no question you should spend ample time researching the best craft bags to suit “way to GOAL!” printables.
Know that hand-rolled cheese with flour and butter baked into tiny soccer balls is infinitely better than store-bought cheese crackers.
Of course, you also need to spend no less than an hour re-packaging gummy bunnies into cellophane craft bags with a black-and-white ribbon tied into a perfect square knot because kids love treats, and chocolate could melt.
Ha.
HAHAHAHAHA.
Let’s skip the pinterest-fiction and get real. The soccer jersey is never in the same vicinity as soccer socks, because boys undress while they run, so each article of clothing is in a different room of the house. It never makes it into the same load of laundry. While it would make sense to corral it all in one place, we prefer the chaos of scrambling to find the missing parts while running late. Whyyyyy slowly sip coffee and read the morning news, when you could get a boost of natural energy from the panic of trying to get your child dressed? Obviously, our way is best.
And then it’s snack time. The moment when it’s your turn to feed the whole team. It had better be monumental.
Here’s where I can really save you. My research and development process to find the perfect soccer snack included observation of my target market: seven-year-old boys. And let me inform you what Pinterest will never reveal: kids do not care about the packaging or the artisanal qualities of the soccer snack… they just want a CAPRI SUN, something crunchy, and something sweet.

Soccer Snacks Do’s and Don’ts
Don’t: Follow a Pinterest tutorial.
Do: Embrace the simplicity of pre-bagged snack items such as Pretzels, and cheese crackers.
Don’t: Adorn snacks with cutesy “Way to Goal!” wrappers or any similar accoutrement.
Do: Add a treat, like gummies, and you’ll win soccer snack.
Don’t: Spend a lot of time assembling.
Do: Resist the urge to create a custom soccer snack treat bag with craft supplies.
Don’t: Forget drinks.
Do: Include CAPRI SUN, if you want the kids to be happy. Kids go nuts over these (like they have for decades. I remember loving them as a kid!)
When it was our turn for Soccer Snack last week, we opted pretzels, CAPRI SUN, and gummies. FTW. Crowd went wild.
