We’ve had this kite for a few years now. The first time I used it, I didn’t quite know how to get it up in the air and it turns out, you need wind. This is a very easy kite to fly, which is the main requirement of any sort of activity that involves an excited child, as you do not really have the time to fiddle with instructions.
If you have a windless day… the kite will not fly. Wind is the main ingredient. Other than that, it requires a very limited skill set to launch it into the air including attaching the tail, lifting the kite in the air, and slowly unrolling the string.
Now that I have mastered those three steps, I’m a kite-flying master. It’s a really fun activity for the beach (when it’s windy) and has entertained Thomas for several years.
I was even able to stand back and let him take the kite reigns and fly it so I could take a million photos of our kite-flying experience together. I’m sure the hippies standing by the beach access thought the entire flurry of me attempting to take photos while my enthusiastic kite-flyer was squealing / running was mildly entertaining.
Photo Tip
I took these with my Fuji x100s when the sun was still pretty harsh, but was able to get the sun to my back and take these that are pretty well lit to avoid the shadows.I did a little editing in Lightroom but the pictures looked pretty good straight out of the camera. Using your on camera flash for fill light when the sun is bright also helps for a more balanced photo.
Look at that happy face.
